Back in 2009 two software engineers, Jan Koum and Brian Acton are trying to look for a job change to upskill their careers. Unfortunately, they had a tough time getting an offer from other companies likely they applied to Facebook and Twitter companies but rejection hits them. Cut to the short as days move forward their haunting keep running and John has a habit of hitting the gym every day while in the processing gym he was unable to attend calls which irritated him so much it leads to find a solution to his problem. He initially designed an app that displays and conveys the user's status such as Gym, Swimming, vacation, Office hours which was the only app at that time which increases the productivity of the person to reduce unnecessary calls. Later both united and made an internet messaging app named WHATSAPP
Initially when Jan and Brian founded Whatsapp with the purpose to provide an ad-free and completely messaging app with no other extra features which made the app more user-friendly believe it or not the exposure of Whatsapp is spreading over the borders with organic promotion and reach. To make it big company and revenue purposes the founders decided to introduce a subscription model to the users, where users need to pay 1$/year and they can use the app. Being a very small team and with an organic reach, they do not need any sum of revenue to make the company move forward. The Funny thing is that the only revenue the company needs to spend on OTP services is for the user to log in on Whatsapp.
That was a very booming stage of the Facebook app and eventually, Mark Zuckerberg predicted the power of the individual messaging apps and tried to negotiate with the founders of Whatsapp. Initially, they denied the offers from Google and Facebook but Mark tried to be in the race to acquire Whatsapp finally in the year 2014 he succeeded to acquire legally the sum of 19$ billion dollars which is a great amount of the decade.
Mark is the master of designing things to generate revenue because Facebook was not the necessary product for everyone but he habituated each and everyone to become a user of Whatsapp. To make Whatsapp habituate the app to each and everyone he decided to remove the feature of the subscription model on yearly basis and made it as completely free as Facebook evolves. Initially, The founders had a liable agreement to continue their vision in Whatsapp but they left and made a statement that "We are against the norms of facebook where data breaching is happening inside the company".
Here the mastermind of Mark's plans started to generate the revenue from Whatsapp in 2018 he introduced a new variant of the Whatsapp app, Whatsapp Business where API plays a major role in generating revenue. The revenue model designed the small scale industries and solo propretiers and business people to make Whatsapp a medium to connect and provide a revenue-generating stream and in that account, Businessperson needs to reply within 24 hours to the customer message when it exceeds the duration then the business owner needs to pay according to country economy range.
This terrific revenue model Whatsapp stood its place in the marketplace where small shopkeepers and solo entrepreneurs and many small-scale businesses and many booking companies registered in Whatsapp Business cater to a larger audience. In the financial year, FY19 Whatsapp has earned 6.8 Crore revenue from Whatsapp Business. The amount invested in Whatsapp invested including salary and promotion is 3.5 Crore. Prominently the revenue of Whatsapp Business is increasing abruptly.
